Glenn Miller - Old Time Radio

Glenn Miller

"America means freedom and there's no expression of freedom quite so sincere as music". (Glenn Miller)

Renowned trombonist, composer, and big band orchestra leader, Glenn Miller was the top selling recording artist from 1939-1943. Miller and his orchestra contributed to the American WWII effort by traveling to Europe as morale boosters for the troops. The Glenn Miller radio show ran under a few different titles, including "Glenn Miller Show," "Moonlight Serenade" (a tune he composed), and "I Sustain the Wings."

From 1939-1943, the Glenn Miller Orchestra starred on CBS in 15-minute episodes 3 times a week for Chesterfield Cigarettes. Despite his age (38 years old), Miller persuaded a brigadier general to allow him to enlist in the Army where he could create a modern style Army Air Force Band. He became an Army Air Force Captain, entertaining the troops in America and Europe. His 50-piece Army Air Force Band gave an impressive 800 performances in England during the summer of 1944 of which over 500 were broadcast on radio.
